Legendary Skateboarding: Nairobi, Kenya

The skateboarding culture is thriving in the heart of east Africa. At their roots a crew of university student skaters, the group came together to found Legendary Skateboarding. Emphasising value for human rights, diversity, and individuality, the crew's mission is to "democratize the skateboard."

In partnership with SkateAid and Pura Vida Skateboarding, the crew chipped in to build a permanent skate park. Located within the premise of Shangilia Mtoto Wa Africa, a primary school that supports orphans, the park hosts a diverse demographic of professional and amateur skaters. It's not uncommon to find a university student teaching a child the technicalities of a kick-flip.

An original crew member, Freddy spends much of his free time managing the Legendary website and mentoring younger skaters. From his looks (dreads, blue shirt), he could easily have been plucked out of the streets of southern California. A Nairobi native and university student, Freddy pours his heart and soul into cultivating a justice-focused skate culture in Nairobi and the larger east Africa community.
